Prevention of recurrent life-threatening arrhythmias: will lipid-lowering therapy make a difference?
نویسنده
چکیده
There is a strong, positive, independent, continuous, graded relation between hypercholesterolemia and the risk for coronary heart disease (CAD). In clinical trials, it has been shown that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors or statins inhibit HMGCoA reductase competitively, reduce LDL levels more than other cholesterol-lowering drugs and lower triglyceride levels in hypertriglyceridemic patients (1,2). Prospective, controlled trials have demonstrated beyond doubt that statins reduce the relative risk of major coronary events by ;30%. This has been shown in trials involving patients with and without CAD and with and without hypercholesterolemia (3–7). Accordingly, lipid lowering by means of statin therapy is now widely applied in clinical practice.

Statins: Newer Roles Including Lipid Lowering Therapy
Statins are most effective pharmacologically agents to decrease total plasma cholesterol level by competitive inhibition of HMG-Co A reductase. Apart from the well-known LDL and cholesterol lowering effect, statins have been postulated to exert other beneficial effects also called pleotropic or non-lipid effects. Better understanding of various pleotropic effects of statins has prompted a new s...

AIMS This study aims to demonstrate that primary prevention (PP) patients with one or more additional risk factors are at a similar risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias when compared with secondary prevention (SP) patients, and would receive similar benefit from an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), or cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillator (CRT-D) implant. The s...

One third of the approximately 1.5 million Americans who will experience a myocardial infarction (MI) in the United States this year will die; survivors will have serious morbidity, including congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, and an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. I Thus, the prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD), before its clinical manifestations, is an important public heal...

Inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase (statins) are the most effective and best-tolerated drugs to treat elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). In addition, they exhibit other effects unrelated to their lipid lowering effects (pleiotropic actions). In recent years, experimental and clinical evidence demonstrates that statins exert antia...
متن کاملA new approach to detect Life threatening cardiac arrhythmias using Sequential spectrum of Electrocardiogram signals
This study evaluates the discriminative power of sequential spectrum analysis of the short-term electrocardiogram (ECG) time series in separating normal and subjects with life threatening arrhythmias like, ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation (VT/VF). The raw ECG time series is transformed into a series of binary symbols and the binary occupancy or relative distribution of mono-sequences (i.e. ...
